The D3400 is equipped with larger sensor compared to the Tough TG-5: APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm) versus 1/2.3' (6.17 x 4.55 mm). It is the most important specification of this model because big sensor lets the photographer to capture pictures of the more professional quality. The D3400 has a wider ISO range of 100-25600 in compare with 100-12800 ISO range of the Tough TG-5. This ISO range allow the camera owner to capture better pictures in dim light situations. The D3400 has more presets of white balance - 12. This option gives the photographer more control over colour. The Tough TG-5 has more powerful 2X-4X digital zoom. The Tough TG-5 has more focus points in compare with the D3400: 25 vs 11. More number of focus points means more convenience when attempting to focus on objects which are not centred.
