Summary
The D3400 highest resolution of 6000 x 4000 pixels (24 megapixels) is better than the Tough TG-5 highest resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels (12 megapixels). The D3400 is equipped with larger sensor compared to the Tough TG-5: APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm) versus 1/2.3' (6.17 x 4.55 mm). It is the most important specification of this model because big sensor lets the photographer to capture pictures of the more professional quality. The D3400 has a wider ISO range of 100-25600 in compare with 100-12800 ISO range of the Tough TG-5. This ISO range allow the camera owner to capture better pictures in dim light situations. The D3400 has more presets of white balance - 12. This option gives the photographer more control over colour. The Tough TG-5 has more powerful 2X-4X digital zoom. The Tough TG-5 has more focus points in compare with the D3400: 25 vs 11. More number of focus points means more convenience when attempting to focus on objects which are not centred.
The D3400 display is better as it has more screen dots 921,000 in comparison to 460,000 dots of the Tough TG-5 display. The higher dot count display is better for reviewing pictures on your camera. The D3400 has better minimum (30 seconds) and maximum (1/4000 second) shutter speeds.
The Nikon D3400 supports external flash. It provides perfect control over the exposure and lighting of the object in low light and in bright light situations where you need to fill-flash. The D3400 battery life is better than the Tough TG-5 battery life. In accordance with CIPA standards the camera owner will be able to produce 1200 shots with the D3400 and only 340 with the Tough TG-5. The Tough TG-5 weighs 250g that is 145g less than the weight of the Nikon D3400. Recording GPS data can be convenient if the camera owner is a traveller, to be able to go into the image metadata and find out exactly where an image was captured.
The Nikon D3400 has 13 advantages and the Tough TG-5 only 7 so the D3400 becomes the best choice. Check the lowest price on Amazon.
