- A great phone, but is Apple killing the iPhone X? Nathan Spendelow, 2018-01-22
The iPhone X moves things onin terms of design, at last, drawing level with Samsung in terms of pureaesthetics, introducing what is a genuinely innovative and effective means ofaccurately recognising faces and unlocking the phone.
It’s supremely quick, has abrilliantly colour-accurate display – Apple’s best ever, in fact – and thecamera is sublime. Unfortunately, it is the price that takes all the headlineshere. With prices starting at a bum-clenchingly pricey £999 for the 64GB version and a franklylunatic price of £1,149 for the top spec 256GB phone, Apple’s top-endsmartphone is simply too expensive.
And yes, I know. Othermanufacturers have been moving their prices steadily northwards in recent timesas well. None, however, have taken things this far. The question is, does thereality of the iPhone X justify the premium charged over the likes of theSamsung Galaxy Note 8? Or, more realistically, the Galaxy S8?
The answer to that question isno. The iPhone X is many things: it’s Apple’s best ever phone, it has anunbelievably good display, but there’s no way I could recommend it to someonewhen there’s a phone that’s just as good, if not better in some ways, and willcost you nearly half as much. SorryApple, but that’s just the way it is.

The reason why the iPhone X is broadly underrated and questioned by those who haven’t used it is that they’re treating it like just another phone. But the people who buy an iPhone aren’t really buying just another phone, they’re buying the iPhone experience. They’re buying connectivity to all of their friends and family already on iMessage. They’re getting the familiar relationship of trust with Apple that means they’ll have regular software updates and a generous device repair and replacement program should they encounter an issue. Apple’s holistic approach to selling a phone is fundamental to the deep loyalty it enjoys from existing users, and it’s the thing that makes those of us on Android devices look on in envy.
A year after the company’s marketing chief made the infamous “courage” comment about ditching the headphone jack, I think Apple showed genuine courage in going with the huge redesign that the iPhone X represents. The company got rid of its signature home button, but replaced it with a better gestural interface. It swapped metal with glass, added wireless charging, took away the fingerprint reader, and stuck a big old notch atop the device like a cake-topping cherry. These changes all take a lot of conviction with any product, but they’re especially daring with something as closely scrutinized as the iPhone.
The absence of outrage and complaint about the iPhone X, especially in our present era where taking offense seems like the best way to be heard, is in itself a huge accomplishment for Apple. The iPhone X isn’t a perfect phone, but so far it seems to be leaving its mark with a lot of perfectly happy users.

The iPhone X was a huge gamble from Apple, but one that really paid off. Losing the home button and altering the design was a dangerous move, but one that was sorely needed after years of similarity and the premium design, extra power, all-screen front mix together to create - by far - the best iPhone Apple's ever made. It's impossible to give a perfect score to something that costs this much - but this is the closest to smartphone perfection Apple has ever got.
